Cape Town Stadium Kicks off
28.01.2010

Last Saturday saw the first match kick off at the brand new Cape Town stadium in South Africa. Following a R4.5 billion investment and years in the planning the stadium formerly known as Green Point opened its doors to the city’s community in spectacular fashion. One of the brand new venues constructed ahead of the World Cup competition, Cape Town boasts great levels of innovation and operates the latest in the Fortress Smart Stadium Management Technology.
Selecting the Fortress Access Control Module as their primary choice, the new facility is able to enjoy the benefits that have become synonymous with this expansive system. Not only is stadium access faster, more accurate, more secure and smoother than ever before, but a range of ticketing typologies, as well as a suite of web based management applications ensure that Cape Town Stadium remains ahead of its competitors. What’s more, in full compliance with recent advances, the solution utilises the latest in software technologies including: Microsoft Windows 2008 Server, SQL 2008 cluster server and Virtual Machine configurations.
Whilst software remains at the forefront of industry standards, the hardware supplied to the venue is no exception. Using the state of the art Fortress TR-140 Reader, the 68,000 capacity stadium can enjoy the associated benefits at each one of the 87 turnstiles. Featuring a carefully crafted ergonomic design, each reader has been constructed to withstand years of use, and intended to support the large majority of ticketing media types used today. Moreover full and seamless integration with CompuTicket, the stadium’s ticketing provider facilitates the issuing process and makes sure that ticket printing may take place on site.

With the first scheduled game having taken place on Saturday the 23rd of January 2010, the system was put to the test, and the results proved overwhelmingly positive. Using all 87 readers located stadium wide, 20,000 fans were granted entry into the venue using their own personal barcode tickets. Healthy flow rates were achieved right up until kick off, and queuing times were reduced drastically from any previous experiences. Moreover a full reporting suite ensured that the stadium management was able to monitor the fan ingress procedure, and enjoy a visual simulation of traffic at the turnstiles.
Continuing our Partnership with Dimension Data, Fortress is glad to have collaborated with Sail StadeFrance in bringing the Smart Stadium Solution to Cape Town. The venue is the latest in a string of high profile stadia to implement the Smart Stadium Solution and is set to benefit tremendously from the many features that the system has to offer.
